St. Cloud, Minn., hospital expansion, renovation designed for safety

Accidents aren't supposed to happen in hospitals, but all too often they do. That's why St. Cloud Hospital officials are counting on their $240 million expansion and renovation project to take health care safety to a new level. When the project wraps up in February 2012, the hospital will boast "one of the safest health care environments in the country," along with its 178 new private patient rooms, 10 new surgical units, shell space for another 12 surgical suites, new intensive care units, and expanded women's, children's and triage offerings, according to design firm Perkins + Will. More

A 17-story state-of-the-art hospital, surrounded by new clinics and parking garages, will replace Dallas County's overcrowded charity hospital in 2014. Parkland Memorial Hospital's board of managers approved a preliminary site plan for a campus that will be built on 26 acres across Harry Hines Boulevard from where the 54-year-old hospital sits. More

LSU Health Sciences Center-Shreveport will buy Shriners Hospital in return for services to the Shriners organization and its patients, according to a pending agreement. LSUHSC-S and Shriners have discussed ways to create a children's hospital in Shreveport, La., for about five years. More


Destroyed hospital scheduled to reopen

In just a few weeks, one of Greensburg, Kan.'s most recognizable community landmarks will reopen. But the Kiowa County Memorial Hospital won't be in the same location and it will look nothing like the 1950s-era hospital that was destroyed in the May 7, 2007 tornado. However, it will have much of the same staff and the same values, more deeply instilled through the tragedy of the tornado and the ups and downs of rebuilding. More

Haitian hospital seeks construction workers to help with modular hospital

A hospital in Haiti where doctors from Holy Name Hospital have been volunteering is now seeking skilled construction to clear land and put together a donated 200-bed modular hospital. "We need to clear land," said Dr. Timothy Finley, an anesthesiologist, in an email. "The United Nations is donating a bulldozer, but we fear that no one here can operate it effectively." More


Bonds for $754M Wishard project get high grades

Three top ratings agencies have assigned high ratings to bonds that will be used to construct the new Wishard Memorial Hospital, the Indianapolis Bond Bank said. The more A's a project receives the better, and Moody's Investors Services, Standard and Poor's and Fitch Ratings all returned ratings of Aa2 or better for the bonds issued for the Marion County Health and Hospital Corp. project. More

Chillicothe, Mo., residents to vote on new hospital

Chillicothe, Mo., voters will decide whether or not to build a new hospital. Construction would require use of the current half-cent capital improvement sales tax, but would not require a tax increase for residents of Chillicothe. The current hospital, Hedrick Medical Center, is owned by the city and was built in the 1930s. The city also would own the new hospital if the proposition passes. Consultants advised the city that building a new facility would be more cost-effective. More


Omaha to get multimillion-dollar VA project

Omaha's aging veterans' hospital is a step closer to a $564 million new tower and facelift. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs announced that $56 million has been budgeted in 2011 for planning and design of the project. Construction could begin in 2012. More
