Joint Commission Raises the Bar on Patient Safety

Hospitals may soon see a closer link between accreditation and adherence to patient safety actions. The Joint Commission in September launched the Center for Transforming Healthcare, which is focused exclusively on improving safety and reducing medical errors. Initially, the center will work with participating hospitals to identify and measure unsafe practices. It will then develop targeted solutions that can be tailored to each location. Eventually, these best practices could become intertwined with the accreditation process.
